“... Heavy shelling, bombing and street battles were reported throughout the day in Gudermes, a rail junction 32 km east of
Grozny
. In recent days, the city of about 45,000 has seen some of the fiercest fighting yet in the year‑old war between Russian troops and rebels seeking independence.
About 10 Russian soldiers were killed yesterday and several of their tanks were destroyed, the Interfax news agency said.
The rebels invaded Gudermes on Thursday in an attempt to thwart Moscow‑imposed elections for a new Chechen leader ...”
“... The rebel attack on Gudermes began last week as polling stations opened for four days of voting. Preliminary election returns from across the republic showed the Moscowbacked candidate, Doku Zavgayev, won almost 95% of the vote.
Zavgayev was
Chechnya's
Communist leader and Soviet‑era parliament speaker. He was ousted in 1991 by rebel leader Dzhokhar Dudayev, an ex‑Soviet general who organized and won elections as president.”
