Is Communism Really Dead?
by Michael J. Matt
This article was first published on September 15, 1991, in the Remnant. This analysis, written from an educated Catholic's perspective helps us to really understand the danger we still face. His analysis again shows Russia is NOT converted.
All current indications point to the demise and collapse of the hard line Communist Party in Soviet Russia. It appears, so we are definitely being told, that the so-called "Cold War" has at long last come to an end. The "bear" has supposedly been struck the mortal blow, which thus eliminates perhaps the greatest obstacle in the path of the "New World Order" and all its works and pomps. There are, however, two warnings which must be given in all this, especially because the situation in the Soviet Union is so uncertain at this time that really no one can be certain of the final outcome. The first warning, if you will, concerns itself with the knowledge that the Soviets are proven masters of deceit, and just because they allow a few statues of Nikolai Lenin to topple in Lithuania does not rule out that this whole thing is perhaps just another angle of the same old lie of atheistic Communism. I don't mean to suggest that this is a fact, but rather to remind us not to celebrate too much too soon, until history has proven that the words and actions of these long-time adversaries of truth are indeed, for once, actually true. Let us not forget that the Soviet economy is in dire need of a complete overhaul and what better way to achieve this overhaul than through an apparent collapse of hard line Communism and a charade of wanting to change to a "democracy", thus inviting complete financial support of other democracies, especially the U.S.A. Perhaps Bolshevik Communism as we know it is really dead but, I repeat — as we know it — watch out for plan B.
It is difficult to imagine that this ideology which Pope Pius XI in his encyclical on Atheistic Communism describes as a "persecution launched against the Church", has simply ended with no further ado and we can all be friends now.
However, for the moment and for the sake of the discussion, let us assume that the present situation in Russia is for real, and indeed Communism is dead or at least in its final death throes. While the liberals celebrate their new "love" with their Russian comrades, and while the conservatives slap themselves on the back for having voted Ronald Reagan into office, who, they claim, was the great knight in shining armor on the white horse who delivered the mortal blow to Communism — let us go a step back and perhaps determine that the need for Communism as a form of government now no longer really exists because its objective has now perhaps been already achieved. This then is where the second warning comes to the fore and is directed to those who see the disintegration of the iron curtain as the beginning of the end of the war between good and evil — to them one can say with certitude that that war has just begun.
Before Boris Yeltsin becomes any more of a hero or a household word, let us consider that for all his life he has been part and parcel of a system as well as a philosophy known as Communism and more properly, atheistic Communism. So while the media is busy canonizing Boris Yeltsin and Mikhail Gorbachev, one wonders if it makes any difference to the American people that these men are still avowed atheists. In his attack on Communist Party leaders and newspapers, (Pravda) have we heard Yeltsin advocating anything at all that sounds even remotely Christian? Have we not heard the now waning "Gorby" continue to repeat, even after the coup, that he has not changed and is indeed still a Communist? So what we see now is perhaps the crumbling of a system which was losing its effectiveness anyway, but rest assured that out of the ashes of this system satan will raise up the phoenix of the next phase in his attack on Christ the King. Yeltsin and Stalin are not so very different from each other especially since they share the same basic creed. The veneer may be changing slightly — but the creed is exactly the same, and that is of course the creed of atheism. Today satan may be changing his costume but let us not forget who is under the mask and in all of these current events it must be noted that at least so far there is no indication whatsoever of any victory for Christ and His Blessed Mother.
The Popes who have condemned atheistic Communism were not concerned primarily with the system of government itself as much as they were about the ideology and philosophy behind it. They viewed Communism as the evil which exists to attack Christ's Church. Pius XI in the above-mentioned encyclical says: "Bolshevistic and atheistic Communism ... aims at upsetting the social order and at undermining the very foundations of Christian civilization." So when Moscow seems to be in a state of turmoil and near collapse let us remember that what is at stake here is far more than a chair assigned to the Soviet Union at the round table in the United Nations building. This is atheism versus Christianity. And when such a huge segment of the atheist side begins to make overtures that lure the Christians into believing that they have been victorious, thus letting down their guard so to speak — then we ought to prepare for a situation in which the good cannot conquer until Jesus Christ Himself steps in and sets things in order.
Note: It is not my intention to suggest that America is the good Christian element and Russia is the bad. The errors of atheism permeate the very Masonic core of the United States and indeed, with Mr. Bush's New World Order, it is clear that the goal of modern man everywhere is to bring about a humanistic state in which God is ignored or dethroned. In 1846 Pius IX pronounced a condemnation of Communism in his Syllabus in which again referring to its philosophy he refers to "that infamous doctrine of so-called Communism which is absolutely contrary to the natural law itself, and if once adopted would destroy the rights of ... and even society itself."
Leo XIII in Quod apostolici numeris gives us a definition of Communism as, "The fatal plague which insinuates itself into the very marrow of human society only to bring about its ruin."
Commenting on Leo XIII, Pius XI states that "with clear intuition he (Leo) pointed out that the atheistic movements existing among the masses of the Machine Age had their origin in that school of philosophy which for centuries had sought to divorce science from the life of the Faith and of the Church."
The reason these quotations are so pertinent is because they were pronounced long before the 1917-Russian Revolution ever happened — and so now that the Lenin tyranny may be coming to an end, let us not for a moment imagine that atheistic Communism and all the errors attributed to it are dead or even anything but alive and more subtle than ever.
Soviets — Atheists — Murderers
Whatever the Soviets are up to or whatever huge concessions they seem to be making we must not be deceived by them because these are the same brood of atheists who crushed children in Hungary, who persecuted Christians in Cuba, who murdered Christian babies in Afghanistan, who tyrannized Taiwan, who shot students in Tianammen Square in China, and on and on. That these enemies of Christ have suddenly been converted and changed into friends and allies who are to be trusted is highly unlikely if not ideologically impossible. If it happened that Gorbachev or Yeltsin suddenly decided to be really converted to Catholicism then perhaps I could share in the euphoria of the present day. But until then these men are as Communistic, as socialistic, and as Soviet as ever and simply not to be trusted or recognized in the halls of governments.
Pius XI comments on those who would play ball with socialists when and if the latter should soften their anti-Christian attitude:
"Some are enticed by the empty hope of gaining in this way the Socialists to our cause. But such hopes are in vain. Those who wish to be apostles amongst the Socialists should preach the Christian truth whole and entire, openly and sincerely, without any connivance with error ... Whether Socialism be considered as a doctrine, or as an historical fact, or as a movement, if it really remains Socialism, it cannot be brought into harmony with the dogmas of the Catholic Church ... The reason being that it conceives human Society in a way alien to Christian truth."
It really is astonishing that the United States is always so quick and eager to deliver hugs and kisses to the Soviets despite the atrocities they have laid upon people all over the world. And despite the fact that their religion has always been anti-Christian in every way. One might even refer to it as the mystical body of satan.
Consecration of Russia Not Done
Nevertheless, perhaps the greatest assurance to those conservatives who are not setting off fireworks and popping corks on their oldest champagnes over the Soviet situation — those who are indeed on the right track in their appraisal of the situation — comes from the words of Our Lady of Fatima. I sincerely doubt that Sister Lucia is viewing the present state in Russia as a proof that sufficient Rosaries have been said throughout the world. Our Blessed Mother was very specific at Fatima and the nonsense that Gorby and Yeltsin are up to assures us that the Holy Father's Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary never happened, and that enough Rosaries have not been said either in the East or West.
Let us recall Mary's words to the Fatima children: "You have seen hell — where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them God wants to establish throughout the world the devotion to My Immaculate Heart.
"If people do what I tell you, many souls will be saved, and there will be peace. The war is going to end.
"But if they do not stop offending God, a worse war will break out in the reign of Pius XI. When you see a night illuminated by an unknown light, know that is the great sign that God gives you, that He is going to punish the world for its crimes by means of wars, hunger, persecution of the Church and of the Holy Father.
"To forestall this, I shall come to ask the Consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart and the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays.
"If they heed My request, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace. If not, she shall spread her errors throughout the world, promoting wars and persecutions of the Church; the good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, various nations will be annihilated. In the end, My Immaculate Heart shall triumph, the Holy Father will consecrate Russia to Me, which will be converted, and some time of peace will be given the world.
"In Portugal, the dogma of the Faith will be kept always. Do not tell this to anyone. To Francisco, yes, you may tell it."

The three children of Fatima were saddened by the prophecy of the persecution of the Holy Father — a result of the Consecration of Russia not being done. |
Mary uses words here that cannot be construed any differently than from the meaning She intended. When She says conversion, She means conversion. That is to change from a position contrary to Christ and His teaching to one that accepts the two. It is a spiritual conversion of the soul that She is concerned with. Our Lady is here setting the requirements and conditions which will cause the Soviet Union to change from atheism to Christianity. If at best Soviet Russia were to change to democracy one would still have grave reason to fear the threats foretold by Our Lady unless we offer prayer and penance. For one could argue that a transition from Communism to Democracy as it is today is a case of regression rather than progression, spiritually speaking, as democracy is more devious in bringing about the same old Godless society only in a more subtle way.
The Errors of Russia
Even if Communism were dead in its political sense, one must still take note of the fact that the seeds of its errors that were planted at the beginning of this century have indeed taken root in the world, especially in the West, and have flourished to a point of no return. So there is no longer any need to regiment these errors through a hard line government. Our Lady said that if Her words were not heeded then Russia would "spread her errors throughout the world." I quote again from Pius XI as he cites a few of these errors. Notice to what a great extent the "errors of Russia" have permeated our own liberal democracy here in America where, perhaps, our very democratic principles gave them such fertile soil.
"Communism strips man of his liberty, and robs human personality of all its dignity, and removes all the moral restraints that check the eruption of blind impulse. In man's relations with other individuals, besides, Communists hold the principle of absolute equality, rejecting all hierarchy and divinely constituted authority, including the authority of parents. What men call authority and subordination is derived from the Community ...
"Refusing to human life any sacred or spiritual character, such a doctrine logically makes of marriage and the family a purely artificial and civil institution, the outcome of a specific economic system. There exists no matrimonial bond of a juridical-moral nature that is not subject to the whim of the individual or of the collectivity. Naturally, therefore, the notion of an indissoluble marriage tie is scouted. Communism is particularly characterized by the rejection of any link that binds woman to the family and the home, and her emancipation is proclaimed as a basic principle. She is withdrawn from the family and the care of her children, to be thrust instead into public life and collective production under the same conditions as men. The care of home and children then devolves upon the collectivity.
"Finally the right of education is denied to parents, for it is conceived as the exclusive prerogative of the community, in whose name and by whose mandate alone parents may exercise this right."
This reads as if Pius XI had been asked to prophesy how society in America would be in the last three decades of this century. Yet what is he speaking of but the "errors of Russia" which have obviously already spread and destroyed most of the once Christian world. Is destroyed too strong a word? I think not — not when you consider that each example that this great Pope points out deals with a direct attack upon the family and more specifically, the children. And once the children are lost then the society is lost — then the devil has his majority of souls and his "spirit destroying" tyrannical governmental regimes are no longer necessary. So the good guys beat the bad guys and the Cold War is over, huh? I say not! Whether Bolshevik Communism as we know it is dead or not — and I believe it is not — the point remains that Lucifer is in full control, humanly speaking, and very satisfied with his legions as he is fully aware that he has Christ's Church by the throat as he laughs in God's face. There is, however, such great hope for those who ask for help. They are shielded by the blue mantle of Our Blessed Mother who foresaw this century and its horrors and came to offer us the key and only way to weather the attacks of the forces of darkness. For while satan laughs Mary cries as Her children fall into eternal damnation like "snowflakes in a blizzard". How long will Her Son see His Mother cry — how long will She hold His arm from smiting His miserable faithless creatures for their sins? While we may fear and tremble at what is to come, we need do only what Our Lady at Fatima said so many times: "Pray the Rosary". She knew that we could never fight or turn back the power of satan on our own, so like the good Mother She is, She gives us the only weapon that satan is powerless in the face of, and that is the Rosary. Fatima is more pertinent today than it ever was, for whether Communism dies or the New World Order thrives, Fatima is our defense. For Mary is far more powerful than satan, George Bush, Boris Yeltsin, and Mikhail Gorbachev combined, and it is Her heel which will crush the serpent. Therefore, if we turn to Her sincerely, satan is rendered powerless.
