The Plot (To Silence Our Lady) Thickens

by Father Paul Leonard, B.Ph, S.T.B., M.Div.

Quite a number of our readers and supporters have written or phoned us here at The Fatima Crusader, in order to express the sorrow and anger that they have experienced when they read about the ruthless persecution that the Vatican Secretary of State and the Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Clergy have waged against Father Gruner. It is indeed a scandal to see how some high ranking prelates, who have a special obligation to exercise their authority with prudence, justice and charity, abuse their God-given authority by persecuting an innocent and conscientious priest who upholds Catholic truth, while they tolerate every imaginable abuse that the modernist and liberal clergy perpetrate with their customary and habitual impunity.

What is so shockingly scandalous and inexcusably reprehensible about the unlawful intervention of the above named ecclesiastical officials is the fact that they flagrantly disregard the rights and duties of the priestly office and attempt to coerce Father Gruner to abdicate from his sacred priestly duty by keeping silent in matters about which he may not, in good conscience, keep silent. Sacred Scripture and Tradition infallibly teach that it is the duty of the priest to teach the Faithful the divinely revealed truths of the Catholic Faith, and to combat error.

All of Us Must Defend the Faith

Both Father Gruner and I have pointed out in our respective articles published in previous issues of The Fatima Crusader, that the Church teaches us that it is morally wrong to keep silent when silence will cause scandal or endanger the Faith. It is precisely for this reason that Father Gruner is obligated in conscience to propagate the Message of Our Lady of Fatima, because Our Lady came from Heaven to warn all of us about the grave dangers to our Faith. Our Lady revealed at Fatima that if Her requests were not fulfilled, then Russia would spread its errors throughout the world and many souls would be lost forever in Hell. The essence of the Secret of Fatima is the revelation of the reality of Hell, and all that must be done in order to prevent souls from going there for all eternity. The third part of the Secret, which has not yet been officially divulged, warns of the crisis of Faith, the heresy and schism in the Church and the apostasy from the Faith that we presently see taking place all around us.1 In the Message of Fatima, Our Lady has given us the means to defeat the heresy, schism and apostasy that presently devastate the Church, and to triumph over the errors that now lead so many souls to Hell.

It would be immoral and criminal to keep silent about the Message of Fatima, since it is in that message that God has provided the Church with the only effective remedy that will heal the grave disorders that beset the Church and threaten all humanity. God sent Our Lady to Fatima to instruct the whole world, in order to save us from annihilation and damnation. The work of Father Gruner's apostolate is to make the message known. Jesus Himself says: "Make it known to My ministers", but the Secretary of State and his subordinates make every possible effort to prevent the message from being preached while they unscrupulously attempt to forbid and punish those who propagate Our Lady's saving message. Those Vatican officials who threaten Father Gruner with grave penalties unless he complies with their unlawful dictates have callously disregarded Father Gruner's attempts to establish a dialogue with them, in order to present his case, defend himself and account for his activities which he has carried out in conformity with his conscience.

Nowhere has anyone (neither Cardinal Innocenti, the Nuncio, nor any of the bishops involved in this matter) ever been able to demonstrate any wrongdoing on Father Gruner's part. So far the only thing that they have done is to employ pressures and threats for the purpose of coercing Father Gruner to cease and desist from propagating the full Fatima Message. In the absence of any legitimate complaint against Father Gruner, there has been a campaign of misrepresentations, distortions and outright slander and lies directed against Father Gruner and The Fatima Crusader.

Malicious Lies and Slander Campaign Waged Against Full Fatima Message

I employ no hyperbole when I say that those who oppose the whole truth about the full Fatima Message have resorted to lies and slander. The Secretary of State's campaign against Father Gruner began in 1978 when the apostolic Pro-Nuncio, Msgr. Angelo Palmas falsely accused Father Gruner of being a "vagus" (a priest who is not incardinated anywhere). Msgr. Palmas repeated this slanderous lie in a telephone conversation which I overheard only a few months ago. The smear merchants Jones and Donovan published lies and derogatory slanders against Father Gruner, and various bishops and clergy have done likewise. The entire campaign has had the atmosphere of a lynching. It is utterly scandalous to see clergy and bishops resort to crude and unfounded lies and slander against a priest. It is equally scandalous to see bishops and parish priests accuse this Fatima apostolate of heterodoxy while never making any attempt to substantiate the charge or to specify the alleged error by indicating the issue and page where the alleged error was printed.

I have already devoted a number of articles to the dishonorable campaign that certain elements in the Blue Army have waged against Father Gruner and his apostolate in the past. For a while it seemed that this unfortunate chapter in the history of this apostolate was over. Most unfortunately however, Bishop Luna has revived the campaign of malicious slander against our apostolate and Father Gruner. In the current issue of SOUL,* Bishop Luna says, "The Holy Father is disturbed by the many letters being written demanding a consecration of Russia. The work in The Fatima Crusader by Father Nicholas Gruner is creating worldwide confusion. Pope Pius XII made a consecration of Russia; Pope John Paul II repeated the consecration in 1982 during his visit to Fatima and again when Our Lady's statue was brought from Fatima to St. Peter's square in Rome in 1984."

*Soul Magazine, January 1990

It is not Father Gruner but Bishop Luna who is spreading confusion: since it is Father Gruner who has published the whole truth about Fatima whereas Bishop Luna and Soul Magazine have distorted and falsified the Fatima Message in order to bring it into conformity with Cardinal Casaroli's pro-Soviet Ostpolitik. Bishop Luna's statement, quoted in the preceding paragraph is calculated to sow confusion in the minds of his unfortunate readers — it is a work of deception.

With No Answer to Our Published Research on the Consecration of Russia, Bishop Luna Maliciously Attacks Us and Tries to Obscure the Full Fatima Message

At issue here is the consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady of Fatima, and therefore we concern ourselves with that consecration and no other. What is so reprehensible about Bishop Luna is his unscrupulous and studied attempt to obscure the question about that consecration by elaborating about the various consecrations that have already taken place #F28173 consecrations of which both Sister Lucia and the presently reigning Pontiff have admitted do not fulfill Our Lady of Fatima's solemn request made at Tuy on June 13, 1929.

Here at The Fatima Crusader, we have painstakingly researched the question and have demonstrated that the consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady of Fatima has most certainly not yet been done. Bishop Luna has retaliated with deceptive ambiguities and a malicious campaign of black propaganda. In order to ruin the reputation of Father Gruner and all of us here atThe Fatima Crusader, Bishop Luna wrote an overtly slanderous letter to Bishop Legaspi, President of the Philippine Bishops' Conference, in which he laments the fact that so many Blue Army members receive The Fatima Crusader, because, he says, "its philosophy promotes ideas against the Holy Father and against the Holy See." This is a monstrous lie. Neither Bishop Luna nor anyone else has ever pointed out any article or passage in The Fatima Crusader which is anti-Papal, and it is for this reason that I say that Bishop Luna has committed a deliberate and malicious crime of slander against this magazine by stating this totally unsubstantiated lie.

This disgraceful crime has been aggravated by certain elements in the Blue Army who have sent the slanderous letter to many other bishops. One of these bishops, misled by Bishop Luna's lies began to take action against us in his diocese. That bishop desisted from his hostile actions against us when I threatened an ecclesiastical lawsuit against him.

Bishop Luna's Lies and Attacks Damage the Fatima Apostolate

The slanderous letter was also used against us in the Archdiocese of Jaro-Iloilo, Philippines. Father Gruner and I had been invited to bring the Pilgrim Virgin of Canada into the Cathedral of Iloilo. Archbishop Piamonte, unfortunately did not have the courage to confront us face to face, nor did he have the courtesy to call us and revoke the invitation for us to come to his diocese. What he did was to inform the Faithful of his diocese that we had cancelled our visit, and that we would not be arriving there with the statue. This of course was a lie.

When we arrived at the cathedral with the statue, the doors were closed and no one was there to welcome us in the gracious and hospitable manner that we had been received into eight other cathedrals in the Philippines. When we entered the cathedral and brought the statue forward into the front of the cathedral nave, the priests paid no attention to us and did not in any way even acknowledge our presence. (Let the reader bear in mind that our invitation was never cancelled.) The Archbishop and the pastor of the cathedral were conveniently out of town, and the Vicar General refused to speak with us. I explained to the young priest there that their insulting behavior was intolerable because we had been invited to come to the cathedral. I pointed out to him that we were diocesan priests in good standing and that we had brought the documents to prove it.

When the Archbishop was informed that we were priests in good standing in our respective diocese, he tried to invite us back, but the organizers of the visit refused because of the insult that we and they had received, and due to our commitment to visit churches in other parts of the country.

This is but one of many examples of the campaign of slander and lies that certain leaders of the Blue Army have waged against us while they display an unbelievable degree of hypocrisy and cynicism by insinuating aggression on our part in their publication.

Father Fox Guilty of Irresponsible Journalism

Let us not, however, single out Bishop Luna and Soul Magazine. Father Robert Fox has also joined in the campaign of intolerant derogatory excoriations against those who say that the consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady of Fatima has not been done. In his publication, Father Fox says: "it follows that those who attack the Pope and bishops for not following the critics' interpretations and mandates as to how to carry out the message are not in line with the Church's doctrines on faith and morals."

The Fatima Crusader, along with millions of Catholics, has appealed to the Pope to consecrate Russia. Father Fox seems to think that one who respectfully appeals to the Pope is somehow attacking the Pope. He also strongly insinuates that we are not in line with the Church's doctrines on faith and morals. This is a very grave accusation, but Father Fox makes no attempt whatever to substantiate the charge. Such irresponsible journalism is morally reprehensible and inexcusable.

Father Paul Writes to Sister Lucia Directly

Father Fox and the authors whom he quotes and publishes have misunderstood and misrepresented Sister Lucia. I myself have desired a clarification from Sister Lucia, and therefore I wrote to her on November 14, 1989. In my letter, I explained to Sister Lucia that:

"It seems clear that they (Father Fox and Maria do Fetal) have not interpreted correctly your words. Their words make it appear that you now contradict what you have written in your memoirs concerning the consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady in Tuy on June 13, 1929 ... On page 405 of your Memorias e Cartas da Irma Lucia (Porto 1973), you wrote: 'The Good Lord promises to end the persecution in Russia, if the Holy Father will himself make a solemn act of reparation and consecration of Russia ... as well as ordering all the bishops of the Catholic world to do the same'."

To help the reader understand it should be noted that on March 21, 1982, Sister Lucia explained to the Apostolic Nuncio and two other witnesses that the Pope must select a date on which to order the bishops of the whole world to make a public and solemn act of reparation and consecration of Russia to the Most Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, each in his own cathedral and at the same time as the act effected by the Pope. These conditions are very precise, and they are the same that Sister Lucia has specified in her published writings. I therefore also made reference to that in my letter to Sister Lucia, saying:

"I recall also that on March 21, 1982, you told the Apostolic Nuncio, Msgr. Portalupi, the Bishop of Leiria, Msgr. Cosme do Amaral and Dr. Lacerda precisely what the Pope and the bishops must do in order to fulfill Our Lady's request of June 13, 1929."

All that Sister Lucia has written in this regard corresponds precisely to the accounts of the vision at Tuy, in which Our Lady of Fatima solemnly requested, in the name of God, the collegial consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. There are two accounts of the vision, both are certainly authentic. In the better known version, Our Lady says: "The moment has come for God to ask the Holy Father to make, in union with all the bishops of the world, the consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart. He promises to save Russia by this means." In the less known but no less certainly authentic account, Our Lady says: "The moment has come in which God asks the Holy Father to make, and to order that in union with him and at the same time, all the bishops of the world make the consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart ..."2

It is clear that the fulfillment of this request requires that Russia be specified as the formal object of the consecration, and that the bishops participate in a solemn and public manner." Sister Lucia also specified these two conditions to Archbishop Portalupi, Dr. Lacerda and Father Messias on March 19, 1983, when she explained why the Pope's 1982 consecration did not fulfill Our Lady's request. I therefore commented to Sister Lucia saying:

"What you have specified in your writings about the consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady on June 13, 1929, has never been done."

I also pointed out that:

"In all this I have been careful to note that nowhere have you ever stated that the request made by Our Lady on June 13, 1929, has been fulfilled."

The articles of Father Fox and Maria do Fetal unfortunately create the impression that the consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady of Fatima at Tuy has already been done, and they strongly suggest that Sister Lucia is the one who is saying this. I mentioned to Sister Lucia that:

"Father Fox states in his magazine: 'Fetal stated, "Lucia wants the message to get out to the world that the collegial consecration of Russia has taken place." ' "

Sister Lucia Replies

In her reply to me, dated on November 21, 1989, Sister Lucia makes it clear that when she says that the consecration of Russia that has been done, it is not the solemn consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady of Fatima at Tuy that has been fulfilled, but a consecration of the world that Our Lord desired. She does not say that Our Lady's request for the consecration of Russia made at Tuy has been fulfilled, but the consecration of the world with special mention of Russia, that Our Lord requested. The two requests refer to two different consecrations, each with their own separate promises. The solemn collegial consecration requested by Our Lady at Tuy will be the means by which God will convert and save Russia. That has not been done. The consecration of the world, to which Sister Lucia referred in her letter of December 2, 1940, has, in Sister Lucia's judgment, been done. By that consecration, Our Lord promises to "shorten the days of tribulation with which He has determined to punish the nations for their crimes, by means of war, famine and several persecutions to the Holy Church and Your Holiness."

"This consecration was made by Pius XII, with concealed mention of Russia ... (and) it was done afterwards by the present Pontiff, John Paul II, on March 25, 1984, after having written to all the bishops of the world ..." In this text of her November 21, 1989, letter to me, Sister Lucia has flatly stated that the consecration of the world, performed by Pope John Paul II fulfills Our Lord's request for the consecration of the world, but she nowhere states or implies that the consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady at Tuy has been done.

Sister Lucia Continues to be Forbidden by the Vatican to Speak About the Consecration of Russia

It is clear that Sister Lucia is still forbidden to talk about the consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady at Tuy. On March 19, 1983, Sister Lucia revealed that she was bound by obedience to an order of silence when she said, "The consecration of Russia has not been made as Our Lady demanded ... I could not say so because I did not have the permission of the Holy See." It seems that she is not free to discuss the consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady at Tuy with anyone who has less than the rank of Cardinal, because she did tell Cardinal Law in May of last year that the consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady of Fatima has not yet been done. Sister Lucia is not free to do as she wishes, and appears to allude to this in her letter, when she refers to "the difficulties which we often have and which prevent us — even though we are filled with good disposition — from achieving what we wish." Sister Lucia is not free to speak, and therefore she makes no explicit mention about the consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady of Fatima in spite of the fact that I questioned her specifically about that topic.

Our Lady and the Aborted Baby

Our Lady warned that: "If My requests are not heeded, Russia will spread her errors throughout the world, raising up wars and persecutions against the Church, the good will be martyred ..."
The error of "legalized" abortions was first introduced in modern times in Russia from where it has spread all over the world and now causes 50 MILLION innocent babies to die very painful deaths each year.

This "legalized" crime, this undeclared war, will cease worldwide once Russia is properly consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary because then peace will be given to the world.

The Pope and Sister Lucia Have Publicly Stated the Consecration of Russia isNot Yet Done

Since the early 1940s when Pope Pius XII first consecrated the world until May of 1989, Sister Lucia has repeatedly stated that the consecration of Russia requested by Our Lady of Fatima has not yet been done. The Pope also on March 25, 1984, in a clear and obvious reference, publicly admitted twice that Our Lady of Fatima is still waiting for his act of consecration of Russia. After consecrating the world, the Holy Father addressed these words to Our Lady of Fatima: "Enlighten especially the peoples of which You Yourself are awaiting our consecration and confiding." As recently as 1987, the Pope admitted privately to an eastern European acquaintance of mine that the consecration of Russia has not yet been done.

At Tuy, Our Lady of Fatima revealed that God asks for the Pope together with the bishops to consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Scripture says, "Woe to the man who contends against God." Those who oppose this consecration place themselves in opposition to God. It is no small evil that takes place when priests and bishops lie to the Faithful by saying that Heaven's request has been fulfilled, when in reality it has been disobeyed and opposed. Bishop Luna, Bishop Cosme do Amaral, Father Fox and many other bishops and priests disseminate the lie because they have lacked judgment and discernment, and therefore have believed the lie because that is what is politically convenient. Our Lady warned us of such clerics when She said at La Salette: "The princes of the people of God will have their intellect darkened."

God has promised to save Russia and bring peace to the world, but this cannot be accomplished until His holy will is fulfilled through the obedience of men. As Saint Augustine says, "God, Who made us without us, will not save us without us", and therefore God requires the obedience of the Pope and the bishops in order to restore peace to the world. The Pope has said on several occasions that he desires the fulfillment of Our Lady's request, but he has also revealed, as I reported in the last issue of The Fatima Crusader, that he is opposed in this by some Cardinals. All who are truly devoted to Our Lady of Fatima must continue to work, pray and sacrifice so that the Pope and the bishops may receive the grace to accomplish what God asks of them, the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It is by this means that God wishes to establish devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and it is by this means, and by this means alone that God promises to restore peace to the world.
