Secret Soviet War In Afghanistan

Legislative Assistant for Foreign Affairs;
U.S. Rep. Don Ritter, Rep. Ritter is Co-chairman of theCongressional Task Force on Afghanistan
, by Philip S. Smith

Despite the Soviet Army's withdrawal from Afghanistan, a powerful and cruel engine of war remains that was designed and placed there by the Soviet Union. This savage war machine continues to methodically torture, kill, terrorize and oppress the Afghan people.

The inset photo is of a Soviet-made "butterfly bomb" used to kill and maim Afghan children who pick them up thinking they're toys. The child above with scars and a missing arm is one of the fortunate ones to have survived these bombs.

In the name of peace, Mikhail Gorbachev scored a major public relations victory in the West when he agreed to remove Soviet troops from Afghanistan. But the gap between Gorbachev's rhetoric and Soviet actions in Afghanistan is vast. Here are a few examples:

  • The Soviets are now engaged in an incredibly massive and lethal airlift to their puppet-regime in Kabul, Afghanistan — 10,000 tons weekly of guns, mines, tanks, artillery and armored personnel carriers. Fifteen hundred such flights have occurred since February.
  • Just prior to their pullout, the Soviets scattered millions of deadly mines. It is estimated that 15 to 30 million mines now remain in Afghanistan with the Soviet airlift providing additional mines which the regime continues to deploy.
  • The Soviets continue to retain thousands of Afghan children and young adults whom they kidnapped for Communist indoctrination and a "ten-year education program". Soviet-nurtured, young Afghans — kidnapped at an early age — have been reintroduced into Afghanistan with a deadly effect - to do battle against their own people around the city of Kandahar.
  • The Soviets officially admit that 30 Soviet military advisors are now fighting in Afghanistan. Some military analysts believe the Soviets have integrated thousands of their Spetsnaz-Muslim troops into the Afghan Communist army.

Unfortunately, there has been a virtual media "blackout" regarding much of the current situation in Afghanistan. The Afghan people desperately lack the humanitarian and military assistance they need for their struggle to topple the Soviet-installed Communist regime responsible for the death and genocide of over 1.5 million Afghans.

Action Call

Write your U.S. House Representative and Senator in Washington.

Rep.________________, House Office Bldg., Washington, DC 20515.

Sen.________________, Senate Office Bldg., Washington, DC 20510.

Ask them to assist in placing wounded Afghan children and resistance commanders in private and U.S. Defense Department hospitals. Also, ask them to demand that the Soviet Union return all of the kidnapped children, and to vote for effective humanitarian and military aid to the Afghan people. They need mine-clearing equipment, gas masks, and communications and radar equipment to allow them to evacuate their villages before aircraft attacks.
